Do you have a little negative voice that controls, judges, and compares your every move? This voice says that whatever you do is not good enough, or it should have been done yesterday, or that all the amazing things you pull out are just “normal” – no big deal.
The truth is that 80% of our habitual talk is negative, disempowering, or self-limiting mind-chatter.
One of the most commonly held beliefs is that we can’t control our thoughts: Whatever comes to mind is random and beyond our control.
The good news is that this could not be further away from the truth.
The bad news is that changing your thoughts actually requires some effort – maybe quite a bit of it.
First of all, why should you be aiming at choosing your thoughts?… yes, that’s right: just keeping and cultivating the thoughts that serve you?
Quite simply because your thoughts create your reality.
It’s probably not a surprise to you that peaceful and loving people only have peaceful and loving thought. What might be a surprise to you is that in fact, the reverse is true: people are peaceful and loving because they have peaceful and loving thoughts. The thoughts come first, the reality second.
Consequently, feeding people hateful and destructive thoughts will make them become hateful and destructive even to themselves and to their family. We can unfortunately find countless validations of this theory in our troubled world, where division and hatred are spewed none-stop on some TV and social media channels.
If your reality is exactly the way you dreamt it, kudos! Most likely you already know what I’m talking about. But if not, if you have no idea why you keep repeating the same unwanted reality over and over again, it’s high time you watch your thoughts, particularly the ones you say you ‘can’t control’, the ones you have ‘no idea where they’re coming from…’ They are coming from your belief system hidden deep inside your subconscious mind. (Cf You have thoughts; You are not your thoughts for how it works).
So how can you change your thought pattern? How can you get rid of thoughts that impact you negatively and replace them with those that will lead you to where you want to be?
Let’s look at one aspect of your life you’re not happy with. The number one thing you want to change, your number one goal. Something you’ve been working hard on, but no matter what and how much you work, you are stuck.
Keep this issue in mind as we go through the following exercise:
Awareness is key: catch every thought you have on the subject. Do it for as long as you need to see a pattern.
Go deeper: Once you have the thought, or a cluster of thoughts, look if you can find the root cause of the thought, which in every case will be a belief that is attached to it. If you’re thinking ‘where does my money go”? Maybe your belief is “I’m not good with money”.
… and deeper: Check if there is an event related to that belief: maybe back then when you were 5 years old and something happened while you were shopping, or something, that you blamed on yourself for… and you're still blaming yourself for it!
Decide to change your story. Yes. Just decide. You can do it by yourself, or you might want the guidance of a trusted friend, a spiritual guide, or a coach. Sometimes deciding to change the story is half the work. Sometimes you do need an expert guide who will help you deprogram those deeply engrained beliefs that have created your story. This is half of my job.
Do the work you need to do. Do it now. It won’t get any better. Period.
Now you can watch your thoughts again, and mercilessly replace the destructive ones with loving, kind, and constructive thought. One at a time, with patience and perseverance. Be ruthless, but take heart: it becomes easier as you go.
No more of the “stupid me”, “I did it again”, “I should have, would have, could have”, “ If I were smarter/thinner/more talented/less lazy/more knowledgeblablabla” BS. None of that is true. None of that is helpful. Nobody has ever bullied anybody into becoming better. So why do you think you can bully yourself into being/having/doing more and better?
No more criticizing, blaming, complaining, comparing – whether it is about yourself or others. It is not a victimless crime. You are the victim. Your dream is the victim – and you can see the results of your thoughts in your life. So congratulate yourself for everything that you have thought into success. And change what needs to be changed. You can do it!
